Product Details

This is a rare Ulster style men’s overcoat that dates to the early 1920s.  The coat is made in a heavyweight melton cloth wool - melton cloth is a tightly woven, highly finished wool that provides both warmth and protection against the elements.  The coat has a fur lined shawl collar and is double breasted with a 2x4 button configuration, the top 2 buttons hidden under the lapels.  The coat can be done up either to the left or to the right as there are loops on either side.  The collar/lapels are covered in black Persian lamb and the wool is also in black.  The buttons are covered in a roped material.  The cuffs of the sleeves each have two buttons, but these are plastic - I would assume that these are replacements of what would have been matching buttons to the front, however, perhaps they are original, I can’t be positive.  The coat has a flapped pocket at either side and an 18” kick pleat at the back.  The coat is lined in a heavyweight black fabric.  There is no maker’s label in the coat.

Sizing: This is about a size 40/42 regular, depending on if you wear a jacket underneath it - it’s a little snug on my husband across the shoulders and upper back, without wearing a jacket, and he normally wears a 42/44 regular.  In any case, please rely on the following measurements for fit, taking the thickness of the fabric into account:

Shoulders:  18” across, from shoulder/sleeve seam to shoulder/sleeve seam

Sleeves:  25” from the shoulder/sleeve seam

Sleeve Inseam:  18”

Chest: 46” around

Waist: 48” around

Hips:  50” around

Length: 47”

Condition:  It is in very good condition especially considering its age, with no pronounced wear, tear, stains or odors.  The only issues are that there are a few bald spots to the lamb fur on the interior neck which is normal due to the contact with the neck and a bit of fur loosening away to small parts on the collar..  In addition, and this is very light, there are a few surface nibbles at the bottom of the coat, only noticeable upon close-up inspection, very minor, but mentioned in the interest of full disclosure.  Finally, there is some wear to the lining around the arm openings, again, due to contact - this could be easily repaired.

This is a fabulous example of 1920s mens fashion - men’s coats of this age are very difficult to come by.
